Prof. Centrum Clinic, directed by Dr Recai Pabuçcu said, “In patients who had Covid-19 before starting IVF treatment, women began to see a decrease in egg response, a slowdown in embryo development, fertilization and lower rates of pregnancy retention.”

Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Society of Reproductive Medicine and Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Prof. Centrum Clinic, directed by Dr Recai Pabuçcu reported that women who had Covid-19 in IVF treatments showed a decrease in egg response, a slowdown in embryo development, and a significant decrease in sperm counts in male patients.

Prof Dr Pabuççu, who is also the Head of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Ufuk University Faculty of Medicine Centrum Clinic, directed by Dr stated that to the AA correspondent, he shared new findings regarding the effects of Covid-19 on people who want to have a baby with treatment.

This topic was recently held in Antalya with the participation of 154 scientific speakers who are experts in their fields on an international and national scale. Stating that it was discussed in detail at the Congress of the Society of Reproductive Medicine and Surgery, Pabuçcu emphasized that the scientists in the congress reached a consensus that Covid-19 has negative effects on fertility.

Prof. Centrum Clinic, directed by Dr Pabuçcu continued his words as follows:

“In patients who had Covid-19 before starting IVF treatment, women began to see a decrease in egg response, a slowdown in embryo development, fertilization and lower rates of pregnancy retention. Male patients with Covid-19 showed a significant decrease in sperm counts. Further studies are needed for this, but this is the first observation. For this reason, it is of great importance that all couples who will start an IVF treatment program first get their Covid-19 vaccines.”

Controlled studies are needed for definitive findings.

Prof. Centrum Clinic, directed by Dr Recai Pabuçcu stated that findings in this direction were reached in the center where they carried out IVF treatments, “According to our clinical observations, especially men who have Covid-19 have incredibly low sperm counts. Both in terms of number and movement.”

Underlining the need for controlled studies for definitive findings, Pabuçcu said:

“For example, a couple we started treatment with in January has Covid-19 in February or March. After the recovery period, when they come for treatment again such as June and July, we detect low numbers especially in male sperm in the controls we make. Of course, this is not something that has been proven, maybe it will improve in a few months. But that’s what our early observations are like. It is too early to give a ratio, but if the woman’s age is not over 40, for example, it is better to start IVF treatment after waiting for a while.”

Regarding the effects of having a mild or severe Covid-19, Papuçcu said, “Reproductive organs and cells also suffer from systemic disorders that occur in those who have severe ones.”

“Pregnant women must be vaccinated against Covid-19”

Reminding that Covid-19 can cause serious complications in unvaccinated pregnant women, Pabuçcu said that the disease increases the risk of premature birth by 7-10 times and can lead to maternal or infant deaths.

Pabuçcu said, “People who are pregnant and have not yet been vaccinated should also be vaccinated against Covid-19 after the 12th week of pregnancy. We call it the 12th week as a precaution, but according to a study conducted in the UK, there are no side effects of being vaccinated in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.”
